A Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) and a Postpartum Doula both support families after birth, but their focus differs. An NCS specializes in hands-on care for the baby especially feeding, sleep routines, and overnight support helping establish healthy habits early on. A Postpartum Doula takes a more holistic approach, supporting the parents’ recovery and emotional well-being while also assisting with light household tasks and basic newborn care. In short, an NCS is more baby-focused, while a doula supports the whole family.
It’s best to book your Newborn Care Specialist or Postpartum Doula as early as possible. Many families reserve care during the second or third trimester, and some even secure services as early as the first trimester to ensure availability, especially for overnight support. However, if your baby has already arrived, you’re still encouraged to reach out, as last-minute openings may be available. Booking early allows time to discuss your needs, create a plan, and feel fully prepared for your baby’s arrival.
Yes. Both Newborn Care Specialists and Postpartum Doulas can support feeding in a way that works best for your family. We can assist with breastfeeding basics such as positioning and latch, help establish and maintain a pumping routine, guide you on proper bottle-feeding techniques, and ensure safe preparation and storage of milk or formula. Our goal is to provide education, encouragement, and practical help so you feel confident and supported with your feeding choices.
Safety is always a top priority in newborn care. A Newborn Care Specialist or Postpartum Doula follows best practices such as safe sleep guidelines (placing babies on their backs in a crib or bassinet), proper bottle and breast milk handling, and strict hygiene including regular hand washing and sanitizing feeding equipment. We follow all current recommendations and safety guidelines from organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many providers are also trained in infant CPR and basic first aid, offering an added layer of confidence and care for your family.
Yes, care for multiples is absolutely offered. Newborn Care Specialists and Postpartum Doulas are experienced in supporting families with twins, triplets, or more, and understand the unique routines and challenges that come with caring for multiple babies. Support includes coordinated feeding schedules, sleep routines, and extra hands-on assistance to help keep things running smoothly while ensuring each baby receives attentive, individualized care.
If your baby arrives earlier than expected, don’t worry, flexibility is part of my service. For families who book six weeks or more of care, I make myself available starting two weeks before your estimated due date to help accommodate early arrivals. We can work together to adjust schedules and provide support as soon as possible, even on short notice, ensuring you and your baby receive the care you need during those critical first days and weeks.
